| Single Parenting: The Importance of Mentors | | Posted by Cherise on Friday, March 27, 2009 at 8:34am | In her article, “Single and Pregnant: Creating Your Own Birth Community,” Teri Brown says, “Creating a birthing community when you are all by yourself not only gives you a sense of support throughout the birthing process but also helps set you up for a successful parenting experience. Just because you feel alone doesn't mean you have to be.”
Many times, we isolate ourselves because of shame, unconfessed sin, or fear. However, Hebrews 10:25 reminds us to “… not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another …” (NIV).
It’s important to acknowledge our sin, repent, and move on. Afterward, we can strive for change by focusing our attention on others who have “gotten it right.” Positioning ourselves around people who have successfully overcome similar struggles is inspiring. Their lives bear witness to the Lord’s faithfulness.
Godly mentors are beneficial to families headed by single mothers. They help single moms by …
- Gently reminding them to include Christ first when making decisions
- Ensuring they make time for self-care (which mitigates burnout)
- Inciting hope which might otherwise dwindle with each crisis faced
- Modeling Christ-like parenting
- Building confidence and encouraging independence
A relationship with a mentor is not tantamount to an intimate relationship with Christ. However, such earthly bonds allow single moms to flourish in their unique mothering roles and be better equipped for their journeys.
“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged" (Deuteronomy 31:8, NIV). Self-Examination
